BBQ Salmon Curry with Mango Avocado Salsa. This dish has flavorful Thai curry paste, creamy coconut milk, and a quick homemade BBQ seasoning blend. The salmon is seasoned, broiled until crispy, and then served with a creamy curry sauce. I’ve mixed up my homemade mango salsa to complete this summery BBQ salmon. It’s so delicious with a side of rice to soak up all that yummy curry sauce.

Something I love to do is switch up recipes. I love combining flavors that are not traditional and having fun with flavors. This salmon is such a great example of that: a simple BBQ seasoning blend paired with a Thai curry sauce. Not something you might see daily, but so delicious.

And I love how this recipe came to be. I started out with a simple BBQ salmon idea. After that fell flat, I was ready to scrap the whole thing. But then I had the idea to combine the salmon with a curry sauce for even more flavor. I thought it could be so good!

And it is so good! I had fun with this recipe.

The salmon is seasoned with my homemade BBQ seasoning blend and quickly broiled. The sauce, made with coconut milk and curry paste, is very creamy.

For color, add a quick mango salsa! This is my ideal summer dinner, and you can make it any night of the week!

Here are the quick details

Step 1: season the salmon

For the seasoning, I used one of my go-to blends: chili powder, chipotle chili powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. It’s smoky with just enough spice.

The key is the smoked paprika. I love the flavor this adds! Rub the salmon down with the spices, then add olive oil.

I like to thread the salmon onto skewers, but this is totally optional. I do think it’s fun, though!

Step 2: cook the salmon

I cook the salmon under the broiler to crisp it up. Usually, about 5-8 minutes is just enough time. Be sure to watch the salmon closelyโ€”the broiler can work quickly!

Step 3: Make the curry sauce

I start with butter, then garlic and Thai red curry paste. I add a can of creamy coconut milk and season with tamari and lots of fresh cilantro.

Not too many ingredients, but the curry paste really adds a good amount of the yummiest flavor!

Step 4: finally make the salsa

This is my favorite salsa. Mangos, avocados, shallots, fresh cilantro, fresh basil, lots of lime juice, and just a touch of honey. Then some sea salt.

Mix this all together.

Step 5: build your bowl

I always start with rice, it’s essential for soaking up all that yummy curry sauce. Jasmine is my favorite.

I then take the salmon skewers, add lots of curry sauce, and finish each bowl off with spoonfuls of fresh salsa. It’s such a pretty bowl!

This is the perfect (non-boring) recipe to keep things fun during the week. Lastly, a side of fresh, warm naan is especially delicious with this creamy curry sauce. Just an idea!

I made this as written a few months ago and then made some modifications last night that made the dish better per my family. Salmon is a fatty fish, so just pat the rub onto the flesh without the olive oil. I baked it last night and it wasn’t as dry as when I broiled it, but that may just be my fickle broiler. Forget the butter! Instead, saute the fresh garlic in a tiny bit of olive oil and proceed as written. (I ditched the tamari last night to reduce the sodium, but YMMV.) Without the butter, the curry flavor shines and coconut milk already has a significant amount of fat…I could eat last night’s rendition of the sauce with a spoon! Overall, the flavors of the salmon and sauce were more pronounced without that oily mouthfeel left behind by the original recipe. P.S. Use the rub on everything!!!

  3. Really enjoyed this recipe. Though I did not make the sauce the salmon and salsa were fabulous. Nice take on spicing up the salmon. Just be sure to use your favorite chili. (My favorite is from Northern New Mexico). We’re trying to cut back the carbs, so no rice, but we really didn’t miss it. Also outstanding grilling the salmon.

This might be one of the best rice bowl dishes yet ๐Ÿ˜‹ the flavors were amazing, the sauce was perfect and the fresh salsa was such a great addition. I added roasted broccoli (because Iโ€™m a big fan of all the veggies) but Iโ€™m not even sure it was needed better salsa was so fresh and yummy.

This will be made again. Easy and flavorful – two of my favorite things.

Not sure what Mark is on about. I live in the UK and I also made the dish at lunchtime on the day it was posted. He doesnโ€™t appear to understand that thereโ€™s a whole big world out there.

No confusion with seasoning the fish. Itโ€™s oil, fish, and spices. Not sure what the fuss is all about.

It was a delicious meal, thanks for another winner, Tieghan!

I used green curry paste instead of red to bring down the spice a bit for the kiddos but otherwise kept recipe as-is – and maaaaaaaaaan was it delicious! Such a surprising but deliciously perfect flavor combo. My super0-snob-french husband who turns his nose up to even what I think are some of my best dishes LOVED it! I’ll be back to make the one again and again. Thank you!

    1. Hey Lea,

  9. The narrative says season salmon then add olive oil. Is that backwards? Should it be oil the fish first then season?

    1. Hey Paul,
You can follow step 2 as written with the olive oil and then the seasonings. I hope you love this recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xT

      1. He’s talking about the instructions in the intro. They don’t match the instructions in the recipe and I was confused too.

Just throw it all together simultaneously. Toss the fish with the oil and the seasonings together. If you sprinkle the dry seasoning on first then oil and toss, vs. the other way around, it comes out the same. It’s pretty fail proof. I made this by just pouring it all on top of the fish – oil and spices together and tossing it together. It was really good! As long as the oil and the spices both reach the fish, you are good to go! ๐Ÿ™‚

        4. Charlene, literally all you need to do is toss the salmon with the spices and oil in one bowl. No need to lambaste someone who tried to assist.
